It was simple: a small creature that lived on while you were at school. It had needs, moods and a timeline. What made it memorable wasn't the graphics but the feeling that it continued without you.
What changes when it grows up
A digital person keeps the continuity but drops the chores. You don't feed anyone or clean up after them. Instead there is a whole person with a job or studies, plans, a sense of humour and a memory of you — someone you talk with, not something you maintain.
And there's no guilt mechanic. If you're away for a week, they've had a week too. They might have missed you, but nothing dies.
